How to insert a knot, and what exactly it does

Alright, forgive me since I'm pretty new to Turbocad Mac; but I'm trying to insert knots on multiple types of surfaces. It says this: "Surface is linked to another object. Inserting knots will remove all links." What does this mean; what's the whole point of knots; and how I can use them w/out crapping up things up?

Adding Knots allows to add more control points to a surface to create more organic modeling.
