Re-scaling a 3D object

Could someone please tell me how to scale a 3D object in a single direction? I have attached a wooden barrel that I want to re-scale. I was successful scaling it in every direction /dimension using the gripper, but I only want to scale it in a single direction. It measures 35" high and 19" wide. I would like to scale it to 35" high and 24" wide. When I use the transform/scale tool, how do I differentially scale the barrel in width but not height without it loosing it's appearance?
Thanks

In the Gripper dialog box, uncheck uniform scaling, the colors of the Gripper will change and you can scale in one direction.

Enjoy
