I had the same problem back when I first started using TC. So lets do some dimensions. Open TC with a new page. The first thing you need to keep in mind are the units you are working in, if you are not sure, select Preferences -> units. Draw a line 60 feet long (720 in). Dimension it. Ok, you now have a thin red line with no visible arrows or font. Select from the menu Dimension -> Size -> User. In the drop down box select inch, then In the size box enter 6.0 as a starting point and click OK. You should be able to read your dimension now. Go to Dimension -> Arrow Size. Enter the size arrow you need, since our font is six inches that would be a good starting size for the arrow too. The size you enter in this box is based on the drawing unit. If the unit is inches, enter 6.0 if it is feet put in 0.5 for length and height. Now you should see your arrows. Go back and change the font and arrow size to make them exactly as you want. Ok, looking good so far? Now the bad news, these changes only apply to the dimension line that you have been working on.
The good news is, you now know what size your arrows and font need to be. Deselect everything on the drawing. Go to Dimension -> Size -> User and re-enter the font size, do the same with Arrow Size. You now have a default dimension to use but you can do better. Drop down the Dimension menu and look at each item in the menu except for Standards Settings and Standards. Set each item to what you want and verify that your font size and arrow size have not changed. Now select Standards Settings, Fill in all the boxes as needed keeping in mind the units selected in preferences, just like when you did arrow size. Click "Save As" and name it. Select Dimension -> Standards to select/verify your user defined setting is enabled. Give it a try. This user setting can be changed or deleted anytime you want. This should get you going, enjoy!
